UN: Help the families of Syria’s disappeared learn the truth about their loved ones

To members of the United Nations General Assembly:

As citizens from around the world, we’re standing with the families of Syria’s over 100,000 disappeared and calling on you to create a new UN institution to clarify their fate and whereabouts. Their families deserve the truth and they have waited long enough.

UN: Help the families of Syria’s disappeared learn the truth about their loved ones
In Syria, the women left behind worry, and they wonder: where are their sons, husbands, fathers? Where are the 100,000 who have gone missing?

President Assad probably took most of them. He probably tortured and murdered them. ISIS probably disappeared many others.

“Probably” is what makes disappearance a formidable weapon of terror. It weighs people down with the daily trauma of knowing but not being certain – and with the need to pretend not to know or else risk being taken next.

Next week the UN will vote to end “probably” by creating for the first time ever a permanent body to investigate Syria’s mass disappearances. Russia will try to stop it. Insiders tell us success could come down to just a few undecided countries.

We could sway them. Together we could end “probably” and help bring the truth to those left behind. So sign now, and we will march into the UN offices of the undecided countries and share with them our combined voices.
